NARRATOR:'Ready, steady Number Squad. Bring on the numbers, here's Rodd.'
RODD:Oh hey, it's you! Thank you. Hello, Number Squad. Guess what we're counting today.
RODD:You got it. Marbles! Isn't this cool? And… Just let me show you my specials box.
RODD:Yeah, marbles! And they're so touchable, and so countable! Can you help me count? Great, okay let's do it.
RODD:One… Two… Three… Four… Five… Six marbles! Six, right? Hey…
RODD:Shall I put them in all at once? Oh yeah.
RODD:Wait a minute. There's somebody at the door. Be right back.
RODD:Cool. Oh man. This is exciting. Oh nice.
RODD:Ah. "Rodd," "Another marble for your collection." "From Neal, the marble maker." Wow, thanks Neal! Check it out. Would you look at that? Oh, I love it!
RODD:Now, six marbles and one more. How many do I have altogether? Let's count them. One, two, three… Four, five, six… And one more is… Seven!
RODD:Do you wanna see them all go through the run? I do. Let's do it!
RODD:Here we go! One…
RODD:Two…
RODD:Yay!
RODD:Three…
RODD:Join in!
RODD:Four…
RODD:Five…
RODD:Six… And one more is seven!
RODD:I'm so happy you like my marble run.
RODD:Now, you know I can show you six add one another way, too, right? Where did I leave my abacus? No fuss, we're on a mission. Checking out those figures using… Addition!
RODD:Okay, pretend these balls are marbles. There were six in my box so, let's count out six. Ready? Okay, here we go. One… Two… Three… Four… Five… Six! Is that right?
RODD:Almost lost count then. Okay. Now we want to add one more.
RODD:Come on little buddy.
RODD:Come on, there! Now, how many are there altogether? Drumroll please…
RODD:Count with me! One! Two! Three! Four! Five! Six! And one more makes seven altogether!
RODD:Six add one is seven. That's addition, Number Team! It's the same when we use our fingers. Six… Add one… Is… Seven!
RODD:Give me seven.
NARRATOR:'Attention, attention, Number Squad! 'Can you count the moves with Rodd?'
RODD:Okay, get comfy. We are going to pretend to be on a roller-coaster, just like those marbles. Can you do six turns with me, and then one more? Like this.
RODD:Are you ready? Okay, here we go. One!
RODD:Two!
RODD:Three!
RODD:And, four.
RODD:And, five.
RODD:And six.
RODD:Last one, here we go. And seven.
RODD:Relax. I'm dizzy just thinking about that track. Now, do you know how many turns we did in total? What is six add one? Seven! Are you sure? Oh, number track!
RODD:So, we did six turns, and then one more. Which made seven altogether! Wow! You guys rock.
RODD:
Let's altogether, be so clever # # Adding up means more, it's a given # # Adding up with the six plus one # # Well you know it's got to be seven # # If you wanna know what to do # # Listen up, I'm telling you # # Easy when you know the rules # # Feels so good when you add it all # # I feel the numbering
RODD:See you next time. Goodbye!

Rodd demonstrates ‘6 and one more’ with his special abacus and with his fingers.
We climb aboard Rodd’s ‘rollercoaster’, making 6 turns and then ‘one more’, before counting on one more from 6 on his number track, and singing the ‘6 plus 1’ number rap.

Teacher Notes
Create an outdoor ‘ball run’ using a length of guttering attached to a fence, with another length underneath to catch the balls, eg six balls of one colour and a seventh ball of a different colour.
Make bracelets using six pasta tubes of one colour (dip in diluted food colouring) and a seventh of a different colour.
Pause the clip before the roller-coaster ‘moves’ section.
Afterwards, children could be ‘slalom skiers’, ‘swerving’ round six cones, and then round ‘one more’.
Children can also rap ‘adding up with the 6 plus 1, on our fingers it’s easily done!’ then demonstrate this by using their fingers.
Curriculum Notes
This clip is relevant for teaching Maths at KS1 in England, Foundation Phase in Wales and Early and 1st Level in Scotland. Also Foundation and KS1 in Northern Ireland.
