Different types of digital images

A digital imageA picture stored on a computer. is a picture that is stored on a computer. It has been digitiseConverts information and data into a digital code that computers can read., meaning it is stored in a digital form the computer can understand.
There are a few ways you can make a digital image. You can:
- create one using graphics software
- import an image using a digital camera or a scanner
- combine the two methods such as adding text to a photo
We can make lots of changes to the digital images we create. Let's see what we can do!

How can you edit images?

You can edit an image to change the way it looks.
If an image is too big or if there are some parts you don't want to show, you can crop it.
Cropping will remove sections of the image and focus attention on other parts of your picture.

If you want to turn an image, you can rotateWhen an object is moved around a fixed point. it.
This is really useful if your digital image is upside down!
If an object is facing the wrong way you can flip it.
This is useful if you want people to face a different way in your digital image.
What effects can you add to images?
You can use different effects to change the way an image looks.
Colour filters allow you to change the overall colour of an image.
We can also change an image's brightness and contrast.

What is retouching?
You can change parts of an image to improve their appearance by retouching certain sections.
We can use the clone tool to copy one part of an image onto another.

You can use the clone tool to remove parts of an image.
For example, if a digital image of a red apple contains a small hole on the apple's skin, we can use the clone tool to copy a different red part of the apple's skin and use this to remove the hole.

The clone tool can also copy parts of an image.
For example, in this digital image of the countryside, we can use the clone tool to add more trees to the image.
