TEMPO:You need to know, so me… I’m Tempo by the way… and my good friend Sabrina, a fabulous upcycler, are going to help you get time….well and truly told
VOX POP – GROUP:Round the Clock !
SABRINA:Do you like? It’s almost done…
TEMPO:Sabreeeeeeena!!!
SABRINA:I’m busy
TEMPO:You had a phone call earlier. I left you a note by the spanners…
SABRINA:Oh …. Tempo this note is tiny…
TEMPO: It might be small but it’s got it all…
It says: Please tell Miss Sabrina Grant…that she has made it to the final of the Rap competition.
SABRINA:Really? Yes!! It says all that here?
TEMPO:And there’s more.
To win the final you must rap more words in one minute than anyone else. You have one month to prepare as the final is on the 15t of… blah blah blah… and the rest….
SABRINA:Best message eva! Once upon a time /Twice upon a time / gonna rap a thousand words if I can find the time
TEMPO:Do you know how many words you can rap in one minute?
SABRINA:Eh… 20? A hundred?
TEMPO:Do you know how long a minute IS?
SABRINA:Yeh yeh…maybe … like
TEMPO:Sabrina needs to be absolutely certain how long a minute is if she wants to win this competition…
SABRINA:There! That long? No…. a bit more…
TEMPO:Many humans find guessing how long one minute lasts rather difficult indeed…

SABRINA:Interesting examples – we keep a minute’s silence to show respect. But what does a minute look like on the clock?
TEMPO: Bring on the giant park clock…
TEMPO:The minute hand measures the minutes on the clock.
SABRINA:When the minute hand moves from one little line. . to the next little line… that shows that one minute has passed… and when it moves to the next line… another minute has passed. There are 60 of these lines, or minutes, round the clock, so the minute hand moves 60 times from one line to the next moving all the way round in one hour.
TEMPO:So! The question is people, what can you do in one minute?

In a minute, I can do my hair with gel and a comb
In a minute, I’d probably do 60 star jumps, because I think every star jump is one second

TEMPO:I will be frankly magnificent, but to be extra sure we should measure the minute in two ways… using a sandtimer and a clock… SABRINA:PLAN! Clock – check…. Sandtimer…
TEMPO:Mmm not that one – that’s a 15 minute timer . . Which is the 1 minute timer?
SABRINA:Gotcha! OK TEMPO are you ready?

Teacher Notes
Key Stage 1:
Show the children a one-minute timer and see if they can be silent for one minute.
What else can they do in one minute? Whose name can you write the most times in one minute? Why?
Help children to recognise that if the name is short, it is quicker to write.
Ask children if they can count the little lines round a clock. How many are there all together? How many are there between 1 and 2, or 2 and 3? Once they have had a chance to investigate, tell them that there are 60 lines round the clock because there are 60 minutes in one hour.
Key Stage 2:
Ask children to estimate one minute.
Ask the class to stand up with their eyes shut and sit down when they think that one minute is up. Once all the children have sat down, discuss the strategies for estimating.
Did they count to 60 or use their heartbeat? This could be related to science.
Ask children to measure how many times their pulse beats in one minute. Now jump up and down for one minute. Measure their pulse again. How many beats now? Why is it faster?
This clip will be relevant for teaching Maths at KS1 and KS2 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and First and Second Level in Scotland.
