What is hope and why do we need it?
Hope is wanting or waiting for something good to happen.
Sometimes it can feel like there are a lot of things going wrong or that there's always bad news. This can make it diffcult to feel hopeful.
For example
- Maybe you wake up in the morning and the weather is rubbish.
- Maybe you have a task to do at school that you don't enjoy.
- Maybe you see something happening in the world that reminds you of how unfair and difficult life can be.
- Many of us are now experiencing 'climate anxiety' as we're faced with a lot of bad news about climate change.
Remember: there are always good things happening too. It's just sometimes these things aren't as easily noticed.
Along with the things you're not looking forward to in your day, there are probably lots of things that you can look forward to and that can bring you a sense of hope.
Video - Advice on feeling hopeful
Wellbeing professional, Lorna Walker, encourages us to think about all the things we're feeling hopeful about.
Sometimes it can feel like there are a lot of things going wrong or that there's always bad news.
What I found really helpful to remember is that there's always good things happening too. It's just sometimes these things aren't as easily noticed.
Maybe you wake up in the morning and you think "oh no, it's raining, it's cold."
Or, "I have this thing to do at school today and I don't always enjoy it." Or you see something happening in the world, that just reminds you how unfair and difficult life can be at times.
It can bring some relief to remember this isn't the whole story. Along with the things you're not looking forward to in your day, there are probably more than you realise that you can look forward to.
Being hopeful isn't about pretending that things aren't the way they are, but it is about opening the attention more widely, and seeing that maybe there's a lot to look forward to.
Think about your day ahead tomorrow. Think of three things that you have to look forward to.
They can be really small things: fresh air, walking by a particular place your like. Even if the weather isn't nice, maybe you can look forward to getting cosy once you get inside.
Maybe you can look forward to going to school or coming back from school, or maybe playing with a friend. Getting into a habit of noticing the things that you might enjoy coming up through the day means that you might actually be more aware and enjoy things more as they're happening.
You can also look forward to the chances that you have to make a positive difference to others, who maybe aren't feeling so hopeful.
Maybe you can help someone with a job around the house or say something kind to someone.
These small things make all the difference. We can remind ourselves and each other that we can choose what we take in and how much. Maybe today you can choose to think about all the things that you have to look forward to.
